Tree-mallow is a very imposing biennial plant, a natural counterpart to the hollyhock. It is often found on rocky ground in coastal areas in the west, frequently near sea-bird colonies. The flower spikes are deep pink, with darker pink veins. They offer both nectar and pollen to bees. The plant's leaves are ivy-shaped, crinkled and velvety to the touch.
