Hoary plantain - Plantago media Hoary plantain - Plantago media© Dr Chris Gibson/English Nature ![]() Most plantains are wind pollinated but not this one! The flowers are in terminal clusters at the end of a long bare stalk. They are highly scented and have long pinkish stamens with purple stalks. The leaves form a flat rosette at ground level and are hairy, greyish-green and oval in shape with five prominent veins. They are interesting enough to find favour with some flower arrangers who like their shape and size. The hoary plantain grows on base-rich soil, especially on downland, but also in meadows and dunes. This interesting and unusual plantain is available from a few specialist nurseries and is a useful plant for a wildflower meadow. AnimalsAtomaria mesomela, Bees and wasps
