Hoary mullein - Verbascum pulverulentum Hoary mullein - Verbascum pulverulentum© Dr Chris Gibson/English Nature ![]() The delicate white flowers of this verbascum are found on tall, pyramidal, branched spikes. They have five white petals with a central core of yellow stamens. The whole plant is covered in woolly white hairs. This gives it an almost ghostly appearance. Like most verbascums, this is quite a tall plant, the leaves of which begin at a basal rosette. In the wild, it is confined to East Anglia, where it occurs on road verges, hedge banks, the edges of gravel pits and occasionally on coastal shingle. In the garden it does best on lime-rich soils. Like other mulleins, it is attractive to insects. AnimalsBees and wasps, Figwort weevil, Flies, The mullein moth
