The two-lipped flowers have green lower lips and brownish purple upper lips. They are borne in open, branched clusters. Bumblebees and honey bees visit the flowers for nectar and pollen. This is a plant of damp woods and shady places, suited to the damp banks on the shaded side of garden ponds.
