This is the most common clover and it is found, either sown or wild, in all but the most acid environments. The typical clover flowers have a hint of pink and are very attractive to bees. The three-lobed leaves, the food plant of the common blue butterfly, are conspicuous and tend to stay green even in droughts. Each lobe is heart-shaped, usually with a white spot on it.

Wood mice may store the leaves and this species is particularly sought out by the red-tailed bumble bee.
