Apple-mint - Mentha x rotundifolia Apple-mint - Mentha x rotundifolia© Leigh Simpson ![]() Like all mints, this is a vigorously-spreading plant and may need to be controlled in a garden. It has soft, woolly, oval leaves, splashed with cream in the variegated variety, which smell of apples when crushed, hence the common name. All mint flowers are an excellent nectar source for butterflies, bees and other invertebrates. Add a sprig to the cooking water of potatoes, beans, peas or to fried courgettes. Apple-mint also makes a superior mint sauce. AnimalsPeacock, Small copper, Small tortoiseshell
