Bergamot - Monarda didyma Bergamot - Monarda didyma© Dr Chris Gibson/English Nature ![]() Bergamot has dense, whorled heads of bright scarlet flowers and oval, toothed, hairy, aromatic leaves. The flowers are rich in nectar and attract bees and butterflies, hence one of the old country names for the plant: 'Bee balm'. Young leaves can be used for flavourings in salad and cooked dishes. The dried leaves can be used in pot pourri or tea. This attractive and colourful plant is an excellent addition to a mixed border. Animals
