Californian lilac - Ceanothus divergens Californian lilac - Ceanothus divergens© Dr Chris Gibson/English Nature ![]() This fast-growing and evergreen ceanothus is a bushy plant with glossy, bright green leaves. The small thimble-like clusters of bright blue flowers are found hanging from the ends of olive green stems. This shrub should be grown against a south or west- facing wall in a well-drained soil. Like all ceanothus varieties, Ceanothus divergens is beneficial to hawk-moths. Most varieties of Ceanothus will also attract bees and hoverflies. Birds like robin, dunnock and pied wagtail will occasionally use this shrub for nesting.
