Yellow iris - Iris pseudacorus Yellow iris - Iris pseudacorus© Dr Chris Gibson/English Nature ![]() This handsome native is a very vigorous marginal plant for garden ponds, stream sides and bog gardens. The large, bright yellow, purple-veined flowers are accompanied by a papery spathe. The characteristically flattened sprays of sword-shaped leaves stretch as high as the flower spike. Yellow iris, like so many pond plants, can be invasive and start to take over a small pond. It may, therefore, be best planted in a basket to restrict its growth. This can be a useful plant for emergent damselflies and dragonflies. It is host to the bright blue flea beetle, Aphthona nonstriata, and may also attract bees. In the wild it is the food plant for several uncommon moths. AnimalsBees and wasps, Beetles, Dragonflies and damselflies, Moths
