Wild basil - Clinopodium vulgare Wild basil - Clinopodium vulgare© Robin Chittenden www.harlequinpictures.co.uk ![]() Bushy and upright, wild basil has lovely pink flowers in dense whorls on the leaf axis and is slightly scented. It has scarcely toothed, oval leaves. Very drought resistant, this basil is an ideal plant for its native woodland edge, or for hedge bottoms. Like other members of the mint family it is pollinated by bees and attractive to butterflies. 'Basil' comes from the Greek basilikon meaning 'kingly', apparently a reference to the plant's great value in cookery and medicine. 'Cushion calamint' is an alternative name. Animals
