Bugle - Ajuga reptans Bugle - Ajuga reptans© Dr Chris Gibson/English Nature ![]() This spreading plant is found in damp woods and meadows throughout Britain and Ireland. In early summer, bugle has upright flower spikes, which are a striking dark blue-purple. The oval, spoon-shaped leaves are arranged in dense rosettes and have a lovely burnished purple-brown sheen to them. The plant is sometimes confused with water mint; however, it lacks the overpowering scent of mint and flowers earlier in the year. Bugle is an excellent plant for ground cover and can be used at the edge of borders and underneath shrubs.
