Marsh violet - Viola palustris Marsh violet - Viola palustris© Bob Gibbons ![]() The pale lilac flowers of the marsh violet have dark violet veins and the blunt petals are arranged in the typical violet shape, with similarly blunt spurs. The single flowers grow on the top of long, leafless stems. The long-stalked leaves which are kidney-shaped or almost round grow from the base of this plant. The typical habitat for these delicate looking plants is acid bogs and marshes. This makes it a very useful addition to a bog garden or around a pond edge. In the wild, this is the food plant of the small pearl-bordered fritillary butterfly, but this will not be found in gardens.
