Breckland thyme - Thymus serpyllum Breckland thyme - Thymus serpyllum© Dr Chris Gibson/English Nature ![]() Breckland thyme is a prostrate and mat-forming plant with upright, oval leaves that are short and blunt. The two-lipped flowers are crowded into round bunches at the top of the stems. This is a rare plant of sandy heaths and grasslands overlying chalk drift, but it will do well in gardens with the right dry conditions. Unlike the other native thymes, the Breckland has a round rather than a square stem, and more massed flowers. Animals
