Bloody crane's-bill - Geranium sanguineum Bloody crane's-bill - Geranium sanguineum© Dr Chris Gibson/English Nature ![]() Bloody crane's-bill is found in base-rich grassland and scrub, open rocky woods, cliff-tops and stabilised sand dunes, mainly on limestone. It is a typical plant of limestone pavement in the north of England. This geranium is a compact, hummock-forming plant with five-petalled, cup-shaped flowers that are brilliant magenta and borne on slender stems above the foliage from June to August. They are very attractive to bees. It has attractive and deeply dissected, dark green leaves with five to seven lobes. This plant makes a really colourful addition to any rock garden or flower border, preferring a well-drained, lime-rich soil in a sunny position.
