The flowers appear before the leaves in late summer or early autumn. The narrow, dark green, fleshy leaves are produced in clusters in the spring. Autumn squill is hardy and naturalises well in grass. In the wild it is found in short, dry turf near the sea, mainly on sandy calcareous soils. Animals
