Agrimony - Agrimonia eupatoria Agrimony - Agrimonia eupatoria© Dr Chris Gibson/English Nature ![]() The tall, striking yellow flowers of agrimony often emerge from hedgebanks and field borders with their divided (pinnate) leaves buried among the herbage. The grooved stems are often tinged with red. Each flower develops into a conspicuous rust-coloured fruit, fringed with hooked bristles. These hooks attach themselves to the coats of animals for dispersal. Agrimony is a tolerant plant found on base-rich or neutral soils, and is a useful plant for a meadow area on well-drained soil. So effective are the hooked bristles at attachment, that it is quite common to find them firmly 'stuck' to socks and trousers worn for gardening. Considerable effort is then required to separate clothing and hooked fruits! Animals
