Greater stitchwort - Stellaria holostea Greater stitchwort - Stellaria holostea© Dr Chris Gibson/English Nature ![]() The lovely white flowers of greater stitchwort are made up of five deeply divided petals. This straggly plant has weak, brittle stems. The rigid, narrow, rough edged leaves have no stalk and hug the square stem tightly in opposite pairs. In the wild this plant is often found in hedgebanks, open woods and wood margins. It tolerates a wide range of soils, avoiding only those which are very dry or permanently wet. Its equally common relative, lesser stitchwort Stellaria graminea, has smooth stems and much smaller flowers. Animals
