Western gorse - Ulex gallii Western gorse - Ulex gallii© Dr Chris Gibson/English Nature ![]() An evergreen and spiny plant with leaves that are often reduced to scales or spines, western gorse has a dwarf habit. It has masses of fragrant, deep golden-yellow flowers from late summer to autumn. Hairy black seed pods follow. Western gorse would make a good hedge in a garden too small to consider common gorse for this purpose, and may provide nest sites for birds such as linnet. However, it is not -not yet at least - widely available for purchase. Animals
