Aspen - Populus tremula Aspen - Populus tremula© Dr Chris Gibson/English Nature ![]() This large native tree has deciduous rounded leaves on flattened stems which tremble and rattle in the slightest breeze. The leaves are bronze-red when young, changing to grey-green and then to brilliant yellow in autumn. The aspen is a more delicate, lacy-looking tree than most poplars. The bark is grey-green and smooth; later it develops strange diamond-shaped hollows. It produces both male and female catkins, the female catkins shedding minute, white, woolly seeds in May. This tree needs space to grow and it is only suitable for a large garden or for a park. AnimalsEyed hawk-moth, Herald moth, Poplar hawk-moth, Puss moth, Red underwing moth
