Ice plant - Sedum spectabile Ice plant - Sedum spectabile© Susan A Tindall ![]() The ice plant is a large, fleshy plant with oval, waxy grey-green leaves which can retain sparkling droplets of water after a shower. It produces large flat clusters of small, star-shaped, pinkish red or white flowers that look spectacular. This is a plant that can tolerate poor soils and hot, dry sites - but it does not like soil that is waterlogged or too much shade. It flowers very late, right through to October, and bees and butterflies like the small tortoiseshell find it irresistible. Its powers of attraction may be second only to those of buddleja. It has the RHS's Award of Garden Merit. AnimalsBuff-tailed bumble bee, Comma, Orange-tip, Painted lady, Peacock, Red admiral, Small tortoiseshell
