Mosquitoes and midges Top to bottom: non-biting midge, Trichocera annulata (a winter gnat), Culiseta annulata (a mosquito)© Top to bottom: Bob Gibbons, Bob Gibbons, Roger Key/English Nature Female mosquitoes are blood-sucking although the male flies feed solely on nectar and fruit. Swallows, house martins and pied wagtails are among many bird species which eat them. Mosquito larvae are aquatic and often found in garden ponds and even water butts. They may be eaten by dragonfly nymphs. Midges are minute, biting flies with predators similar to those which consume mosquitoes. These include Daubenton's bat.
