Grasshoppers are almost entirely vegetarian but crickets will eat animal matter including the larvae of other insects. Their large bodies make a substantial meal for some birds, including kestrels which may often be seen hunting over rough grassland and downs for grasshoppers later in the summer, sometimes in family parties of four or more individuals.
