Spiders and harvestmen Top l to r: zebra spider, house spider; bottom l to r: garden orb-web spider, Leiobunum rotundum (a harvestman)© All: Roger Key/English Nature All spiders are carnivorous and account for innumerable flies, aphids and other invertebrates. In turn, they are themselves eaten by common lizards and slow-worms; by many birds, including nuthatches, treecreepers and various species of tit, and by small mammals including the woodmouse. Harvestmen, which superficially resemble spiders, are also predators of other animals including slugs, snails, woodlice, millipedes, centipedes - and spiders. Among the creatures that eat harvestmen are some birds, common lizards, beetles, centipedes and hedgehogs. However, harvestmen are able to produce a secretion from glands on their body which evidently deters some potential predators such as blue tits and house sparrows.
