Greater spearwort - Ranunculus lingua Greater spearwort - Ranunculus lingua© Dr Chris Gibson/English Nature ![]() This is a very robust marginal aquatic with large, bright yellow, 'buttercup' flowers borne on long stalks. It has red-tinged, spreading stems and dark green leaves. These are either spear-shaped, in the common name, or in the shape of a tongue, according to the botanical name. This species can be invasive in a small pond, but it is certainly spectacular. For smaller ponds, the plant's close relative the lesser spearwort may be a better choice, although even this one may need keeping under control. Animals
