Lesser spearwort - Ranunculus flammula Lesser spearwort - Ranunculus flammula© Dr Chris Gibson/English Nature ![]() This buttercup-like flower occurs as a plant of pond margins and in marshes, flushes and even wet meadows. Unlike buttercups, the leaves are undivided and spear-shaped - hence the name. Lesser spearwort has distinctive scrambling, red tinged stems, which can root at leaf junctions. It is a useful and attractive plant for the pond, and is less invasive than its close relative, the much larger greater spearwort, Ranunculus lingua .
