Fringed water-lily - Nymphoides peltata

This hardy and deciduous aquatic produces bright yellow flowers all summer and resembles a small water-lily, although it is actually a member of the bogbean family. In a small pond, it makes an attractive alternative to other floating aquatics like true lilies. It has small, rounded green leaves with small brown spots.

The fringed water-lily should be planted at a depth of 15 to 60cm. In a pond with a mud bottom it can be invasive like many other aquatic plants, but surplus growth can be pulled out in the autumn and composted with little danger of losing the plant altogether. It provides cover in a pond for tadpoles, small fish and a variety of invertebrates.
