The long leaf blades have a fine tip. The flowers are in characteristic spike-like pyramids. Crested dog's-tail is a common grassland species, found in old meadows, and tolerates poor soils. This is a suitable species for sowing as part of a meadow mix. It is the food plant of the larvae of several species of butterfly, in the brown and skipper families. Animals
