Meadow foxtail - Alopecurus pratensis Meadow foxtail - Alopecurus pratensis© Dr Chris Gibson/English Nature ![]() Meadow foxtail is a perennial grass with upright stems and hairless leaves. Like all grasses, the individual flowers are collected into crowded panicles, which in this case are sausage-shaped. In the late spring, the orange-brown, pollen-bearing anthers appear, giving the grass-head the appearance of the tail of a fox. This attractive grass is less invasive than most and is useful in a wildflower meadow. AnimalsMeadow grasshopper, Small skipper
