Flowering-rush - Butomus umbellatus Flowering-rush - Butomus umbellatus© Dr Chris Gibson/English Nature ![]() A magnificent aquatic plant with narrow, bright- green twisted leaves, flowering-rush bears umbels of showy pink flowers, striped with veins of a slightly darker shade of pink. The name is misleading, since this is not a member of the rush family, but a distant relative of water plantains and water soldier. It prefers nutrient-rich water, and is not uncommon in ponds, ditches and the edges of rivers where the water is not too fast-moving. It makes a delightful addition to the edge of a medium-sized or large pond. Animals
